I learn all the time. Been making artwork since I started: mostly paintings, and I do a little bit of writing about science. Martial arts, spirituality, philosophy, theories and beliefs inspire me. There are a lot of designs, patterns and mixed textures in my work, but there’s more to it than just paint. It’s structure. It’s technique. It’s visualization. This is powerful. Life flows, like martial arts. There is no program, and yet there is: it’s a balance. This is a way of living. Heartside Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am until 3:30pm. I have two children, Aaron and Josh. Aaron was a twin and his brother’s name was Anthony William Knight. He passed away of SIDS at the age of two months and one day, April 26, 1988. Aaron and Joshua are a big strength in my life. The biggest is God. If it wasn’t for God in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I had a job working for Family Fare for seven years when I became ill with fibromyalgia and arthritis. After my hip surgery, my doctor told me I couldn’t work anymore. That really put me into a depression. I did art off and on since high school, so I started doing jewelry to keep me going. Everyone liked it, and I began to sell my jewelry. That’s when I started my art again. My grandmother didn’t know how to read or write, so she drew,…

A Night at the Museum

by Peter Carlberg
“Oh my God, the Old Museum was a wonderful place! I used to go there all the time. The New Museum just sucks – it doesn’t have a fraction of the stuff the Old Museum had.” It was the umpteen-millionth time I had heard such sentiments expressed by a common citizen “on the street,” as it were. Mention the former Grand Rapids Public Museum on Jefferson Street or its replacement on the banks of the Grand, among regular folks of a certain age, and you will hear similar opinions expressed emphatically and at length., as they tick off a long list of all the old collections, exhibits and features they remember and miss. Carping like this was very loud back in the mid-90’s when the new museum opened and the old one closed its doors to the public. A decade before, when my wife-to-be and I were dating, we loved…

My name is Vicki Hiar and I’ve lived in the Heartside area for over 20 years. I have been doing artwork at Heartside since I went into remission with cancer in 1999. I started weaving rugs and wall hangings and table runners for three years or longer. I learned to do some wood burning and painted a little, but now today I am quilting wall hangings and other things by hand. I have been doing that for about 2 years now, and I enjoy it very much. Vicki passed away peacefully this month. Our thoughts are with her friends and family. Heartside Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:30am until 3:30pm.
